During a trip to Extremadura, Spain, I had the chance to watch a Booted Eagle hunting in its territory. From the top of a hill, I could watch it circling high in the sky while scanning for small birds below. It was suddenly swooping down with incredible speed, diving straight toward its prey. A common kestrel, which had its nest on a nearby cliff, wasn’t happy to see the booted eagle getting too close while hunting. Even though the kestrel was much smaller, it bravely attacked the booted eagle to defend its territory. The kestrel flew higher to swoop down on the eagle, while the eagle twisted and turned to defend itself with its sharp claws. I couldn’t believe how quick and agile they both were, and I was especially impressed by how fearless the little kestrel was in defending its home. Everything happened in a blink of an eye, but I managed to capture this stunning moment when the two birds faced each other in a dramatic standoff. It was like watching a real-life aerial battle between two fearless hunters of the sky.
