Northern Lapwing (Vanellus vanellus)

Silhouette at Dawn

I have always enjoyed observing and photographing waders in the early morning hours, when they start their frantic search for food. I took this photo from a boat during a trip to the Danube Delta. Just before dawn, I observed a colony of Northern Lapwings foraging in the shallow waters. They have a unique method of feeding, tapping the ground with their feet to bring pray such as worms and insects to the surface. As the sun began to rise, I tried to photograph the birds against the glowing reflections on the water, patiently waiting for them to move into the right spot while searching for food. Luckly, at one moment, a single bird separated from the group and remained alone right against the gleaming water. Its distinctive long wispy crest makes its silhouette unmistakable. The population Northern Lapwings has significantly declined in recent years due changing agricultural practices and habitat loss.
